The Hitchbot's are back! We are excited to announce that 11 of our newest friends have been launched from Erin Woods School to explore Canada in the hopes of better understanding what it means to be Canadian. Each Hitchbot is loaded with a bucket list of things to do on their Ultimate Canadian Adventure, along with questions for different Canadians to answer about what they think Canadian Identity means. We are hoping to gather a bunch of information this summer about our amazing country and the people who live in it.
Keep an eye out for our friends this summer, and feel free to follow along on one of our many social media accounts! Twitter: @HitchbotWoods https://twitter.com/hitchbotwoods?lang=en Instagram: @hitchbotwoods https://www.instagram.com/hitchbotwoods/?hl=en Website: http://hitchbot.weebly.com

Hello fellow Canadians.
This past Friday we officially launched our first 3 Hitchbots! Student groups have been busy working away completing their hitchhiking robots over the past few weeks. They have been constructing, soldering, glueing, writing and problem solving to make their Hitchbots just right. A few groups were ahead of schedule so we decided to get a few of them out as soon as we could. I'm happy to say that we've already seen some exciting developments. One of our Hitchbots, 'Hitch', has already made his way out of Calgary, taking a trip to Mackay's in Cochrane for some Ice Cream. We're already seeing the kindness of Canadians in action. We've also seen some mentions from other Canadians on Twitter, who have found our other Hitchbots at the Calgary Zoo and the Calgary Tower. More groups are hoping to launch their Hitchbots this week, so please keep your eyes peeled for these curious little bots around the Calgary Area (for now!). Hello Canada!
Let us introduce ourselves. We are a team of grade 4/5 students and teachers from Erin Woods School in Calgary, Alberta. Together we are in the process of designing and building a number of hitchhiking robots that we hope will help us develop a deeper understanding of our country and the people who live in it. We have been working on a number of different activities to help build our understanding of Canada over the past few months in preparation for this project. We sent a survey home asking community members and our families about their ideas of Canadian identity. We also have been identifying interesting landmarks, activities, music, food and cultures that are commonly identified as 'being Canadian.' In order to develop a deeper understandings of electricity and robotics we have engaged in a number of interactive learning activites. We spent some time building squishy circuits in our classroom (circuits that are connected by dough that is conductive or insulative). We also had fun building 'Blinky Bots' with the Western Canadian Robotics Society. We were also really lucky to have the design thinking team from the Calgary Board of Education come visit us and allow us to discover Robotics through play. Students also spent some time this day engaging in weatherproofing workshops as well as learning how to select appropriate building materials for our Hitchbot. Right now we are working on writing a detailed instruction booklet meant to be attached to our Hitchbots to inform people how to help our Hitchbot or the purpose behind our journey. We are also in the middle of using an online 3-d modeling program to design blueprints of our models. Please check back with us for regular updates or follow our adventure on Twitter (@HitchbotWoods) or on Instagram (@hitchbotwoods). |
